Fun Facts About Your Skin

Most people do not think about their skin because it is something that we all take for granted. There are many fun facts that you should know about your skin and here are five that should delight you!

Your Skin Is The Largest Organ In Your Body

Many people do not realize that their skin is a single organ or classified as an organ at all. As this is the case, the skin is actually the largest organ in your body. It will make up 12 to 15% of your entire body weight and will cover an area of 21 square feet when laid out. The blood vessels in the skin will also measure 10 miles when laid out. With that much skin, and the knowledge that it is an organ, it is especially important to take care of it to the best of your ability.

Temperature Control

One of the primary purposes of the skin is to control your body temperature. This is why you will sweat when you are hot and get goosebumps when you are cold. Another purpose of the skin is to defend the body from germs and dirt.

When looking at sweating, the skin is able to produce, at a maximum, 2 to 3 gallons of sweat each day. This is created by the sweat glands that are found in the skin. It is also one of the reasons why you are advised to drink a lot of water in the summer and when you work out. Women actually have more sweat glands than men, however, men have more active sweat glands.

The Number Of Skin Cells

For each square inch of your skin, there are over 18 million skin cells.  This is good to know when you find out about the number of dead skin cells you lose every minute. Each minute, your skin will lose around 35,000 dead skin cells which is not much when you consider the amount you have. These dead skin cells actually make up a large part of the dust in your home. Some dead skin cells do have a harder time shedding, so exfoliating on a regular schedule is a great way to keep your skin healthy and glowing.

The Skin On Your Lips

The skin on your lips is very sensitive and is around 200 times more sensitive than the skin you find on the end of your fingers.  This is why any damage to the mouth, as anyone who has ever gotten a fat lip will attest to, will feel more painful than damage to any other area of skin.

The Thinnest Skin

The skin has a varying thickness depending on where it is located.  Your hands and feet will have the thickest skin because they come into contact with the elements more. The thinnest skin on your body is actually on your eyelids, which is one reason why it is so easy to see the veins below the surface of the skin.

Taking care of your skin is so important. It is the largest organ in your body and your first defense against impurities from the outside world. Let the team at European Beauty help you get the best skin of your life. Taking care of your skin is a crucial part of overall healthcare.
