Cellulite occurs through poor circulation and poor lymphatic drainage which cause fat cells to become engorged. These fat cells then push against the connective tissue beneath a person’s skin to cause the surface of the skin to dimple or pucker and look lumpy. Oestrogen stimulates collagenase formation in the skin’s connective tissues. Collagenase breaks down the connective tissue, weakening collagen and causing fat to bulge upward to form a lumpy surface. It is typically caused by factors such as genetics, hormones, hypothyroidism, lack of exercise, poor blood circulation and lymphatics.
